Materials Analysis Research Laboratory - Overview

The Materials Analysis and Research Laboratory (MARL) is part of the Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Department of the College of Engineering at Iowa State University. MARL's function is three-fold, namely research and development, teaching, and service. Its facilities are used for chemical and physical characterization of a wide variety of materials to support research and teaching programs within the university. MARL also conducts research on unusual material evaluation problems for outside agencies through research grants. MARL also undertakes analyses for industry when comparable facilities are not available.

MARL is under the direction of its manager, Jerry Amenson, who is responsible for the laboratory's supervision and operation. Researchers wishing to use the equipment should consult with the manager concerning available equipment, usage charges, training options and other policies

Acquisition of MARL's equipment was made possible by funds from the university and by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, the Iowa Department of Transportation, and various industries. Maintenance and upgrading of laboratory equipment is provided through equipment usage charges.
