Thermal Analysis

Thermal Analysis Thermal analysis is provided with TA Instruments thermogravimetric (TGA) and simultaneous DTA-TGA (SDT) modules. TGA can test samples in inert gases from ambient to 1200°C, with a 25 position autosampler. SDT can test samples in inert gases from ambient to 1500°C.

Results are available on-line as the data is being acquired. They may be downloaded from the server and processed on the user's computer using TA's TRIOS or Universal Analysis software.

Thermo-gravimetric analysis module (TGA).
TGA records mass loss during a programmed time and/or temperature profile. Changes in mass indicate moisture loss and phase changes which occur at set temperatures indicative of the compound.
The furnace is capable of heating rates of 0.1-500°C/min and a maximum temperature of 1200°C. An automated sample changer can be loaded with up to 25 samples. A variety of atmospheres can be used during the analysis.
Simultaneous Differential Thermal Analysis Module (SDT)
SDT measures mass loss and the temperature difference between an unknown sample and a reference sample.
The furnace is capable of heating rates of 0.1-100°C/min and a maximum temperature of 1500°C.
Scans of Limestone and Dolomite
Both scans shows mass loss at ~920°C where carbon dioxide comes off Ca sites. Dolomite also shows mass loss around 730°C where carbon dioxide comes off Mg sites.
Data analysis software is available to permit clients to perform analysis of their data. Please contact us for setup and use instructions.
